Mountain Huts and Shelters
Mountain Huts and Shelters
Welcome
There are more than 700 mountain huts, shelters, aid stations and rescue points in the Italian mountains. Every mountain hut has its own history and many have entered into the hearts and stories of mountaineers. Some huts are bona fide engineering feats; built in difficult places with sophisticated materials. Some of the shelters, on the other hand, are simple stone buildings with the bare essentials. There are mountain huts that can hold hundreds of people and shelters for intimate friends or family. Some have hosts and restaurants and others are self-service. All of them have been used as a home, a shelter and a meeting point.
Without the mountain huts, trekking in the mountains would be much riskier, more difficult and challenging. The mountain huts are also a clear example of the way the Club Alpino Italiano thinks: the mountains are open to everyone. Their beauty and charm must be accessible to both mountaineers and families looking for a peaceful place in nature. For this reason, mountain huts, shelters and aid stations are important in an often hostile environment. This is also why the trails must be well maintained and safe.
